From Redundant Farm Buildings to a Thriving Distillery!

The Challenge: Reviving neglected agricultural buildings for modern use
A set of traditional farm buildings in Norfolk had fallen into disrepair, no longer viable for modern farming. Located along a main route to the popular North Norfolk coast, these historic structures needed a new purpose. As farming alone became financially unsustainable, diversifying assets was essential for survival.

The Vision
Restore and repurpose 19th-century barns for 21st century use into a distillery, office space, taproom, and visitor facilities. The goal was to preserve the buildings’ historic charm while introducing modern functionality, using existing materials to maintain their agricultural character.

The Solution
With high renovation costs, the Rural England Prosperity Fund provided the necessary financial boost. The grant enabled the restoration, allowing the conversion of the site into a business hub. The project’s sympathetic approach ensured the heritage value was retained, while creating a new tourist destination.

The Results
This transformation has revitalised the site, helping the farm diversify and become sustainable. The introduction of an artisan distillery aligns with consumer demand for local, eco-friendly products, creating new jobs and boosting the local economy. As a new tourist attraction, the distillery enhances Norfolk’s appeal beyond the traditional hotspots.

Conclusion
Thanks to grant funding, this project has breathed new life into rural heritage, ensuring economic growth and job creation, while preserving history. A win for both the farm and the local community.
