The Challenge
Many rural businesses possess valuable historic assets, including traditional farm buildings, heritage landscapes and sites of local significance. While these assets often form an important part of a business’s identity, they can also create maintenance costs and ongoing management challenges.
The challenge for many landowners is identifying ways to preserve heritage assets whilst generating sufficient income to secure their long-term future.
At the same time, growing interest in rural tourism, local heritage and authentic visitor experiences has created opportunities to bring historic buildings and sites back into productive use.

Project Example: Lambert’s Farm, Norfolk
One example of heritage-led diversification involved the conversion of redundant agricultural buildings at Lambert’s Farm in Norfolk.
With external investment support, former farm buildings were successfully transformed into DIY livery facilities, providing space for up to 14 horses whilst creating a sustainable new enterprise for the business.
The project demonstrated how underused farm assets can be repurposed to create both economic value and long-term rural business resilience.
