The Challenge
Following ARC’s work on the Norfolk Environmental Skills Gap Analysis (NESGA), an important challenge emerged. While many students studying environmental subjects have strong technical knowledge, they often have limited exposure to the practical realities of agricultural businesses and land management.
Modern farming operates within a complex landscape of environmental obligations, commercial pressures, food production requirements and climate-related challenges. Understanding how these factors interact is essential for the next generation of environmental professionals, policymakers and land managers.
ARC identified an opportunity to bridge this gap by creating practical learning experiences that connect students directly with working farms and the decision-making processes behind sustainable land management.
Our Approach
Building on the findings of the Norfolk Environmental Skills Gap Analysis, ARC developed a partnership approach bringing together education providers, environmental organisations and farm businesses.
In partnership with WWF support and the University of East Anglia, ARC organised a practical farm-based learning experience at the Morley Foundation Farm in Norfolk.
The programme enabled students to explore:

✅ Cover cropping and soil management
✅ Watercourse and habitat management
✅ Integration of environmental and commercial objectives
✅ Real-world farm business decision-making
Students engaged directly with farm management staff and explored the practical challenges and opportunities facing modern agriculture.

Why It Matters
Many of the environmental challenges facing society require collaboration between farmers, land managers, environmental professionals, researchers and policymakers.
Creating opportunities for future professionals to engage directly with farming businesses helps build better understanding, stronger partnerships and more practical solutions. This project demonstrates how research can be translated into meaningful action, helping prepare the next generation to work across environmental and agricultural sectors.
